Community College extends entry criteria for applicants
The St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) has extended its entry criteria for applicants by basing entry on the applicant’s chosen programme of study.
The institution held its 16th graduation exercise on Wednesday, June, 24, 2025, with more than 900 students turning the tassel on their graduation caps under the theme, “Empowered by Knowledge: Driven by Purpose”.
During the ceremony, Director of the SVGCC, Karen Thomas, said the institution has taken significant steps to broaden access, academic, and skill- based learning.
“While our traditional matriculation requirements remain in place, we have innovatively extended our entry criteria for applicants, basing entry on applicants chosen programme of study,”she said, addressing students and others gathered for the graduation exercise.
Thomas said this progressive adjustment allows students who might not possess the full complement of CSEC subjects to gain admission if they make the specific requirements for specific programmes.
“This approach has also primarily benefited our home-grown associated programmes offered at the Division of Technical and Vocational Education and the Division of Arts Sciences and General Studies.”
Though not yet applicable across all programmes, Thomas said the initiative sets a clear tone for inclusivity and adaptability as the college strives to serve an even wider demographic.
“Another significant stride under the pillar of access has been the introduction of our college access programme ‘Pathways to Success’, commonly referred to as CAPS.”
She said that the programme is designed for applicants with some CSEC passes who might require additional academic support before transitioning into one of the college’s associate degree programmes.
“CAPS is a testament to our commitment to inclusivity… this programme equips students with both academic reinforcement and skills-based training ensuring they are well prepared for the demands of higher education,” the SVGCC Director, continued, adding that every resident of St Vincent and the Grenadines, who seeks to improve their circumstances must find a pathway to the college that suits their aspirations and needs.
Whether this occurs through traditional routes beginning with CSEC qualifications through diverse short courses, innovative micro-credentialing processes, or through collaboration with the Ministry of Education and other government bodies, Thomas said that the avenues must remain open and accessible.
“These opportunities are not merely educational; they are transformative, meticulously designed to empower individuals with knowledge and purpose. So ultimately, our commitment to access is therefore more than just an operational adjustment.” She said the college aims to present students with more academic opportunities, and that this initiative reflects the institution’s philosophy that education should empower individuals regardless of their circumstances, and pave the way for their personal and professional growth.
Thomas on behalf of the SVGCC extended gratitude to the former Director, Nigel Scott, as well as the deans, faculty and staff members, some of whom will shortly be leaving the institution.
“Your leadership, vision and dedication have been instrumental in positioning the SVGCC as a distinguished institution of learning,” Thomas concluded.
