Fire Chief urges more care to prevent house fires, bush fires
FIRE CHIEF and Superintendent in the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF), Markneal Ellis, has expressed concerns about the number of recent fires that have occurred, especially bushfires.
Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT in the wake of five reported weekend bushfires, Ellis has made a special appeal to the public, noting that “persons are deliberately lighting these fires”.
The fire chief also pointed out that this is a criminal offence and perpetrators may be charged if caught.
“In terms of the bushfires, what we are seeing is that persons are deliberately lighting these fires. Bushfires can be caused naturally, but from what we are seeing in St Vincent mainland, the majority- 99% of the bushfires, persons are lighting these bushfires,” Spt Ellis said, adding, “…the problem that we are having is sometimes where they light the bushfires, persons’ houses are in the pathway.”
