Windwards flatten Jamaica at Arnos Vale Playing Field

Windwards Volcanoes blew away the Jamaica Franchise by an innings and 22 runs inside three days, last weekend at the Arnos Vale Playing Field in the West Indies Cricket Board Professional Cricket League.

The Jamaica Franchise’s second innings demolition came via off- spinner Shane {{more}}Shillingford, who grabbed 6 for 31 from 19 overs, four of which were maidens.

It was the Dominican’s 28th five-wicket haul.

His efforts saw the visitors plunging to 102 all out, having trailed on first innings by 124 runs.

Shillingford’s six-wicket haul saw him surpass former Guyanese and West Indies leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo’s record of 325 wickets, which had stood until last Sunday.

When Shillingford had John Campbell caught by Devon Smith for 22, he went ahead of Nagamootoo, as the leading wicket taker in regional first class cricket competitions.

Only Carlton Baugh with 24 and Campbell – 22 scored over 20.

Earlier on Sunday, the Volcanoes closed their first innings on 328, with Andre Fletcher making 124. His knock spanned 258 balls, in which he counted 11 fours and a pair of sixes.

Tyrone Theophile, at the top of the order, scored 55, in which he counted seven fours, with his fellow opener Devon Smith’s 36 including six fours. Johnson Charles compiled 26, which included three maximums.

David Bernard claimed five for 57 and leg-spinner Odean Brown, three for 83, bowling for the Jamaica Franchise.

When the match began on Friday, Jamaica was dismissed for 204. Jermaine Blackwood scored 96 and Carlton Baugh 33.

Blackwood struck 10 fours and a six, while Baugh spanked five fours.

Left arm spinner Alston Bobb bagged 5 for 38 and Johnson Charles — 2 for 14.

The Volcanoes, for the outright win, gained 17 points, made up of 12 for the victory, three bowling points and two batting points.

Jamaica Franchise came away with four points — one batting and three bowling points.

The Windwards Volcanoes next meet the Leewards Hurricanes at the Beausejour Cricket Stadium in St Lucia from this Friday, while Jamaica Franchise hosts Trinidad and Tobago Red Force.

The other sixth round match pits the two leading teams — Barbados Pride and the Guyana Jaguars in Bridgetown Barbados.(RT)
