Fine imposed for traffic offences too lenient – head of traffic branch

Head of the traffic branch of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) Superintendent Kenneth John says the $80 fine imposed on people guilty of traffic offences is too lenient.

And with that, he is calling on the relevant authorities to increase the fine.{{more}}

“That penalty of $80 is not severe enough. We are calling on the authorities to look into it. You find that some drivers are just doing the same thing over and over and it comes like the fine is nothing to them,” John explained to SEARCHLIGHT on Wednesday.

John further stated that he wants to see a point system introduced for people who breach various traffic laws.

In explaining how the point system would work, John said for every traffic conviction, points will be tallied for that driver until they reach the maximum number of points — at which point, they would have their licenses suspended or revoked.

“There are some drivers out here with more than 100 traffic convictions. My thing is for the roads to be safe and I would really like to see this introduced,” John said.

According to John, they have also tried cracking down on people driving around in unlicensed vehicles, but the problem still persists – especially privately owned vehicles.(KW)
