Central Leeward Secondary School grabs football titles

The Central Leeward Secondary School (CLSS), formerly the Barrouallie Secondary, captured both the Under-16 and Under-21 titles of the Coca Cola Secondary Schools Football Competition last Friday afternoon at the Victoria Park.{{more}}

First, the Central Leeward institution pushed aside the St Martin’s Secondary School 2-0 in the Under-16 showdown.

A well taken header from Deno John in the 3rd minute put CLSS in the lead, before their opponents could have realized that they were in the championship game.

The more organized and talented CLSS team then began showing their true worth, as they dictated the pace of the match, with their inter passing and positioning.

A loose piece of defending by St Martin’s gave Kyle Edwards a free

shoot in the 35th minute, with which he made no mistake, as CLSS doubled their tally.

The second half saw the St Martin’s Secondary coming into the contest, but they did not have enough depth to make their few half chances count.

Romario Wales came close to cutting the deficit, but his free kick only found the crossbar.

The winner was never in doubt, as the CLSS’s superiority prevailed as they successfully defended the title they won earlier this year, as the 2010 edition finished last January.

Kyle Edwards of the CLSS was named Player of the Final.

In the Under-21 finals, CLSS went one step better than their 2010 placing, taking out the Bethel High School, also 2-0.

A crisp, low, right footer from Vasbert Ledger in the 18th minute gave the Central Leeward lads and their supporters a moment to “get on”.

In more of a contest, the Bethel High School players conjured up forays of their own however, they lacked that decisive instinct in the last third of the field.

The second stanza was similar to the first, with much of the play concentrated in the midfield. Bethel’s Kemron Charles muffed a chance, which was presented on a platter, leaving his team to rue that missed opportunity.

Oalex Anderson then sealed the deal in the 80th minute, as he successfully converted a penalty to take his tally of goals to 12.

Anderson emerged as the Most Valuable Player of the Under-21 Finals. He also copped the overall Player of the Finals award.

The double titles gained by the CLSS follow that institution’s claim on the Senior Division of the schools’ Netball competition last month. (RT)
