Components displeased over CDC prize giving ceremony
The manner in which the prize money for components involved in VincyMas competitions 2026 has left a bitter taste in the mouth of some mas men, artistes, and cultural aficionados.
Usually, what dominates post carnival discussions, is the historic late payments to components. However, this year, the government distributed over one million dollars in prizes quite soon after the festival ended, but, the low-keyed prize giving ceremony left some members of the components- mas, pan, and calypso- feeling disrespected.
The prize-giving ceremony for the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) was held below the CDC’s office in Victoria Park and took the form of a simple ceremony on August 6, which saw the winners being given a time slot in which to attend to collect their winnings and take a photo with government and other officials present.
Usually, the CDC prize giving ceremony is a somewhat gala event where the components’ members, sponsors, government, and CDC officials all turn up, and with many giving speeches. In recent years, this event has taken place at the Cruise Ship and Ferry Terminal, the Murray Heights Hotel, and Independence Park (Victoria Park), among other places.
The displeasure in the way the prize giving ceremony was held, reared its head on the same day of the event and was the focus of several radio programmes and social media discussions.
