CRAB not going to spread like Covid/AIDS – medical specialist
Infectious disease specialist Dr. Jerrol Thompson has said the drug-resistant bacterium, Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB), recently found at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (MCMH) is not something that will spread through the country like COVID-19.
Dr. Thompson’s word of assurance came on Tuesday night, August 11, 2026 during WE FM’s Feedback programme, and on the heels of the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environmental Health and Energy (MOHWEE) officially informing the public that they were monitoring the drug-resistant bacteria which was detected in four patients at the MCMH.
Dr. Thompson, an Internal medical practitioner stressed that CRAB is not something that is new to the medical field, and it’s not unique to St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). He expressed confidence that medical professionals here are equipped to handle the situation.
“It isn’t the type of thing that is going to be spreading like we saw with COVID, like we saw with sexually transmitted diseases or anything of that nature. It’s not AIDS, it’s not COVID, it’s not any of these things,” Dr Thompson stressed.
