Caution given on the responsible use of AI
With Artificial Intelligence (AI) becoming increasingly advanced and accessible, Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Technological Innovation (NCTI), Petrus Gumbs, is encouraging Vincentians to understand the technology and use it responsibly while being aware of the risks associated with it. Gumbs was speaking on NBC Radio’s “Police on the Beat” programme on Monday, August 10, 2026 during a discussion titled “Artificial Intelligence, Tool, Threat or Both?” The discussion focused on the growing use of AI, its potential to assist people in completing tasks more efficiently, and the risks that can arise from its misuse. Gumbs said AI can be useful in situations where large amounts of information have to be processed, allowing tasks to be completed much faster than through traditional methods.
He pointed to weather tracking as one area where AI can be useful, noting that the technology can process large amounts of data and provide several possible outcomes. “Now you have something that will crunch data at such a speed that it will give you so much possible outcome…which is a good thing,” Gumbs noted.
He said too that the development of AI should not simply be viewed as a threat to employment. Instead, he encouraged Vincentians, particularly older persons to become familiar with the technology and understand how it can be used.
Gumbs pointed out that younger people are already making use of AI, and said the older persons should also take the opportunity to learn about the technology rather than immediately viewing it as something that will take away their jobs. He stressed the importance of understanding AI as the technology continues to develop and become more widely used.
