World Family Doctor Day

By Drs Miriam Sheridan and Francesca Onu

Since 2010, the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) has declared May 19 World Family Doctor Day (WFDD). Each year a theme is chosen for WFDD. This year it is: Depression: Let’s Talk.

Depression is the leading cause of disability globally.

It can often lead to suicide if not treated.

One in five people worldwide are affected by depression and anxiety and signs and symptoms include decreased appetite, decreased ability to concentrate, decreased self-confidence, staying awake with repetitive thoughts and sadness.

Treatment for depression can cost up to $3 trillion a year. It can be prevented and/or treated by talking therapy or starting anti-anxiety medication.

The energy used for worry and anxiety can be diverted into things like exercising and the depressed are encouraged to reflect on things in their lives that they can be grateful for. The importance of talking to a trusted person is paramount.

If you believe you are unduly anxious or worried, talk to your GP (family doctor) or DMO. He or she may help you with advice such as mentioned above, or at least is in a position to refer you to a counsellor or other specalized professional.
