Nicole Sylvester, a loss to Grammar School

Editor: The rampant effeminization of the males in SVG has probably put a tremendous burden on our poor women, to the extent that they have been overwhelmed by the need to take on the responsibility of leadership from the men who have abandoned their role, to pursue the best interests of the society at all times and so ensure, that as far as is possible, the next wave of citizens inherit a foundation on which they could reasonably be expected to thrive.{{more}}

One such case reflecting the painful impact of this overload of responsibility on our women is the loss of Nicole Sylvester, the vibrant and committed woman whose track-record as a lawyer, reflects a relentless pursuit of excellence in any forum in which she had offered her services.

She was, up to the time of her death, the president of the Parent Teacher Association of the Grammar School. Because of her nature to be a perfectionist, many of her late night hours may well have been spent in thinking through the process by which she hoped to make improvements to/for the welfare of the school.

One of the things which must have occupied her mind was the reduction of territory on the school compound, with the erection of a restaurant there, which must be cramping the growing student population. When one takes into account the agony of the absence of adequate shelter at the bus stop used by the students and the noticeable negative impact of a bar almost on the precincts, the territory occupied by the restaurant could have been put to better use for the benefit of the Grammar School and Girls’ High School.

We have lost Nicole Sylvester when she seemed to be at the peak of her productive life and Grammar School is the poorer for it. There will now need to be a compensating effort from the Young Leaders, the Association of Past Students and the Parent Teacher Association in the months and years ahead. I feel sure that the Girls’ High School will offer valuable support.
