‘Traffic Angels’ win Police Christmas Carolling Contest

Last Friday evening, the ‘Traffic Angels’ doused the ‘Fire Busters’ with water to take the 2019 Police Cooperative Credit Union (PCCU) – Standard Caribbean Shipping Inc (SCS) Police Christmas Carolling Contest championship.

And when the water had ‘run off’, the Traffic Angels walked away with five of the seven prizes in the senior choirs’ category including best traditional carol, best original song, best speech and best turned out/best dressed choir. Uniformly dressed in their white pants, red shirts, white sneakers, red and white socks and red and white baseball caps, the Traffic Angels thrilled the audience firstly with their traditional song “Joy to the World” then their original song “A Joyous Season”.

It was a keenly contested carolling contest which saw all of the choirs giving good renditions. But in the opinion of the three independent judges, Traffic Angels’ performances were superior to the others. Second place went to Central Carollers who sang “When a child is born” and “Christmas on the beat” While the third position went to the 2018 champions, ‘Fire Busters’.

For placing first, the Traffic Angels received a cash prize of EC$500 courtesy the Police Cooperative Credit Union, the champion trophy compliments Standard Caribbean Shipping Inc and one case of drinks compliments Vita Malt. They also received four additional trophies for winning the other categories.

Meanwhile, debutants, the Rose Hall Police Youth Club carollers dethroned the 2018 champions Sandy Bay Police Youth Club Carollers with an electric performance of one traditional Christmas carol to take the title in the 2019 junior’s category. They received a cash prize of EC$300, a trophy and one case of drinks. Chapmans Police Youth Club placed second with Vermont Youth Club taking the third position.

Sixteen choirs participated in this year’s carolling contest; eight in the seniors and eight in the junior category. The major sponsors of the carolling contest were the Police Cooperative Credit Union (PCCU) and the Standard Caribbean Shipping Inc. Others sponsors includes Vita Malt, Global Distributors, Facey Trading, Coreas Distributors, Sports Locka Plus, ECGC and Jax Enterprises.

Commissioner of Police Colin John and Vice President of the Board of Directors of the PCCU, Station Sergeant Brenton Smith delivered brief remarks. The 2019 carolling contest was held under the theme “A joyous evening of carolling and entertainment”. It was staged at Central Police Station.

Then on Saturday December 14, the Traffic Angels participated in the inaugural Ministry of Transport and Works Social Club Christmas carolling contest and were crowned champions from a field of eight choirs.
