We are trying to bring Madongo products back – Sutherland

Chairman of the Arrowroot Industry Association Jeffard Sutherland says that the making of Madongo products is part of a dying culture.
Madongo is made from arrowroot flour.

“We are trying to bring it back and we are hoping to have your support,” Sutherland told a gathering at the Chatoyer National Park in Rabacca on October 28.

He was speaking at the annual Madongo festival which saw a large turnout of Vincentians who sampled the wares from the numerous stalls that were set up to sell local dishes.

Sutherland said that looking at the stalls, he could see that quite a lot of preparation had been done as fish and other local dishes that people tend to eat with madongo were also available.

“Persons complain it was not enough or the lines were too long,” said Sutherland who added that although the making of Madongo seems to be a dying part of the culture, the support given to the festival means a rebirth is possible.

Manager of the Arrowroot Association and Chairman of the Madongo Festival Selmon Walters had before the festival stated that it should be an occasion that persons use to show their appreciation to the concept of local consumption.

He said that the country benefits from initiatives like these as they promote local products and side-line imports.
