SVGCC associate degree graduates rewarded with scholarships, special award

Four graduates of the associate degree programmes of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) have been awarded three year university scholarships for exceptional performance in 2018.

Roeka Burke, Deanna Archibald and Zariann Ollivierre have been awarded National Exhibition scholarships, while Troy Eustace received a special award.

Burke, a former student in the Division of Teacher Education, read for an associate degree in teacher education (primary); Archibald received an applied associate degree in Business Studies (Sales and Marketing) from the Division of Technical and Vocational Education; and Ollivierre received an applied associate degree in Business Studies (Accounting) from the Division of Technical and Vocational Education.

Eustace, who was one of the valedictorians at this year’s SVGCC graduation, did not meet the age criterion for a National Award, but still received a three-year university scholarship because of his exceptional performance in the associate degree in teacher education program (primary).

Additionally, 12 students of the 2018 associate degree program received bursaries. They are Adaeze Stephen, Natalia Ollivierre, Azaria White, Maurika Craigg, Rafique Dickie, Shanika Jackson, Resabel Chambers-Cozier, Ackelia Cornwall, Reba Cozier, Tonya Burgin, Gabriel Glasgow and Wennique Williams.

These 16 students from the SVGCC’s associate degree program make up one third of the 48 students from the college who have been recognized with national awards for their performance in 2018. The other 32 students came from the Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies and were awarded on the basis of their performance in the Caribbean Advance Proficiency Exam (CAPE) of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC). Of those, 17 received national scholarship awards (five-year university scholarships), seven received exhibition awards and eight received bursary awards.

Just six weeks ago, seven students who graduated in 2017 from the SVGCC’s associate degree program were recognized and rewarded for their accomplishments. Prior to this year, only students of the CAPE in the Division of Arts, Sciences and General studies were recipients of National Awards. However, Cabinet made a decision that as of 2017, scholarship awards would be provided for students from the associate degree programmes.
