SVG sees slight improvement in 2018 CSEC grades

Almost 75 per cent of the subject entries by school candidates in St Vincent and the Grenadines were awarded Grades I to III in this year’s Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC).

A release from the Ministry of Education said that there were 1647 school candidates sitting 11,839 subject entries in 32 subject areas from 26 secondary schools.

This year, 74.67 per cent of the subject entries were awarded Grades I to III. This is an improvement on last year’s 73.25 per cent.

“This year, 16.82 per cent of the passes were at Grade I level, 37.29 per cent were at the Grade II level and 45.89 per cent at Grade III,” the release said.

According to the release, seven schools recorded percentage pass rates of 80 per cent or more.

These schools are the Girls’ High School with 97.42 per cent, St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown with 90.82 per cent, St Vincent Grammar School with 88.69 per cent, Thomas Saunders Secondary School with 84.89 per cent, Mountain View Adventist Academy with 84.67 per cent, St Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua with 84.57 per cent and St Martin’s Secondary School with 80.82 per cent.

Thirteen other schools obtained pass rates between 60 and 80 per cent.

Kyle Da Silva of the Mountain View Adventist Academy, Sariah Jackson of the Girls’ High School and Delaan Nedd of the St Vincent Grammar School are the top three performers for St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The education ministry issued a press release last Friday highlighting a pass rate of over 91 per cent at the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) for 2018.

This year’s pass rate was recorded at 91.04 per cent. This was a slight decrease compared to 2017 results, where the overall pass rate was 91.74 per cent.

The release said that 610 candidates wrote the examination, 554 of whom were from the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College (SVGCC) and 56 private candidates.
