VINLEC continues to assist Dominica with electricity restoration

St Vincent Electricity Services Limited is again assisting the people of the Commonwealth of Dominica by providing technical support to the Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC).

The island’s electricity supply was severely disrupted following the passage of Hurricane Maria, last September.

A team of five from the Transmission and Distribution Department left the island on Sunday, February 11 for Dominica to help with the restoration of electricity. This team is being led by Rodney Duncan (line supervisor, Construction and Maintenance) and will work with staff from DOMLEC to rebuild the network and restore electricity to sections of the island. The other members are Mowai Latham, Lamont Sterling, Kemmael Jacobs and Kemoul Harry.

VINLEC’s initial response to Dominica was part of an initiative, where regional utilities provide assistance to countries that are impacted by natural disasters immediately after the incident.

VINLEC’s decision to reach out at this time comes in light of the developments on the island, where a number of customers remain without power. VINLEC’s acknowledges that electricity supply is critical, as many essential services (water, gas, communications) and infrastructures depend on its continuity for their smooth functioning. In addition, the way of life of the citizens is altered without electricity supply.

During the 2017 hurricane season, VINLEC provided technical assistance to Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands after their systems were damaged by the passage of hurricanes.
