SVG sees increase in prices for household gas

Following negotiations between the Government and major stakeholders in the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) industry, an increase in the price of cooking gas was implemented on September 1.

In areas within a two-mile radius of the courthouse in Kingstown or Area 1, 20 lb cylinders will now be sold at $31 and 25 lb cylinders at $37.49.{{more}}

In Area 2 or areas extending from Area 1 to Langley Park on the windward side and Keartons on the leeward side, 20 lb cylinders are now $32 and 25 lb cylinders are $38.49.

In “Area 3” or all areas on mainland not within areas 1 and 2, 20 lb cylinders are now $33 and 25 lb cylinders are $39.49.

100 lb cylinders remain at $149.94 for areas 1 through 3.

In Area 4, the Grenadines, 20 lb cylinders are $36, 25 lb cylinders are $42.49 and 100 lb cylinders are $170.94.

Speaking on the price change, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Trade and Commerce Nathaniel Williams said that the change came after importers and retailers indicated that the set prices were not satisfactory for them to operate within the market.

He recalled that last year, with the global reduction in prices of petroleum products, the Government took a decision to reduce the price in LPG sold. However, since then, the Government met with stakeholders and agreed upon a new price.

Williams said that based on the Price and Distribution of Goods Act, LPG is a price controlled good, and stakeholders are also aware that many persons resell the product at prices way beyond the price control set by Government.

He said most if not all these occurrences take place without receipts being given to the buyers. He explained that the prices were based on amount distributors spend on the transportation of LPG.

According to Williams, cooking gas is not just an economical product, but a sensitive one that is used by all classes.

“Where it is not available, people would find other types of fuel,” he said, adding that with the issue of climate change, the forest is under severe stress and so the Government has seen the need to protect the forest.

Williams also stated that the Government is interested in ensuring that the gas is available and affordable with respect to all parties involved.

The permanent secretary stated that the consuming public would be happy with the steps taken to ensure that the price for the product is established and transparent and noted that the pricing would be reviewed every three months and would be set based on the variations in international prices.

Williams noted that arrangements have been made with the office of the Attorney General for persons who are caught selling the good beyond the negotiated price to be brought to justice, in order to ensure the good is available and affordable.

Williams also stated that consumers who may encounter problems in terms of pricing or any other matter may call the Consumer Affairs Division in the Ministry of Trade at 456-1111 ext 315, 884, 519 or 300.(AS)
