Trade union stalwarts demonstrate support for Supervisor of Elections

In a show of solidarity with Sylvia Findlay, a former vice-president and general secretary of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Teachers Union (SVGTU), a group of colleagues paid her a courtesy visit.

The visit focused on the attacks to which she, as supervisor of elections, has been subjected as a result of the ongoing political protests.{{more}}

“As trade unionists, we are no strangers to protest, what we found appalling is the abusive attacks not only on her life but also to her immediate family,” a release from the veteran trade unionists said.

“Findlay is known within the teaching profession and the trade union movement as one of impeccable integrity and one with a keen sense of fair play, this was evident in the way she conducted herself as an educator, trade unionist and now in these trying times as supervisor of elections.

“We her colleagues are deeply perturbed as society has stood idly by, as attempts are being made to destroy the character of an outstanding public servant and daughter of the soil.

“We reaffirm people’s right to protest, however, we strongly condemn the dehumanization of Sis Sylvia Findlay to the point of her having to have round the clock police protection.

“We do believe that this state of affairs will undermine the very foundation of our democracy and corrupt those very structures of our Society on which we depend,” the release said.
