GHS described as ‘a champion school’ by Headmistress
The Girlsâ High School is âa champion schoolâ.
At least, that is the opinion of its headmistress Andrea Bowman, who referred to the secondary school as such during her report at the schoolâs graduation ceremony on June 23.
âThis year, the Girlsâ High School is a champion school. We earned that status by virtue of the fact that our relatively small athletic team at the Inter Secondary Schools Sports emerged as the champion of the girls division,{{more}} a position we have not held since 2009,â Bowman said at the ceremony, which was held on June 23 at the Kingstown Methodist Church.
Bowman also highlighted a number of other achievements by the school to support her claim, including outstanding performances in netball, volleyball and basketball competitions, the NTRC I Square competition and the school receiving the prize for the most outstanding secondary school in the National Science Fair for the second consecutive period.
She also said that the GHS solidified their âchampion schoolâ title regionally when they won a competition held by the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union.
âThe champion status of the GHS was cemented regionally when three of our fourth formers were triumphant in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Unionâs business innovation contest,â she said.
The girls who entered the school in 2011, when the GHS celebrated its 100th anniversary, were commended by Bowman for their academic performance over the five years, as well as their participation in music, dance, athletics and the RBTT Young Leaderâs competition.
She encouraged the class to enjoy their graduation celebrations and to treasure and protect themselves.
âEnjoy the celebration of your graduation. You have earned it,â said Bowman.
âEnjoy and embrace the freedom from commitment that your youth affords you. Treasure and protect your beauty, value yourself and your intrinsic worth. May God continue to guide and protect you.â
Corsel Robertson, director of Airports, delivered the feature address.
Her speech encompassed the theme of this yearâs graduation, which was âForging Ahead, Carrying the Torch of Excellence.â
The 123 graduates were encouraged by Robertson to step cautiously into the unknown and carry the torch of excellence, even in difficult circumstances.
âDo not be afraid to step into the unknown, but do not jump into it recklessly. Step cautiously,â she said.
âCarry the torch of excellence by being optimistic even in the face of difficulties.â
Robertson, who is a GHS alumna from the Class of 1980, also reminded the girls to exercise persistence.
âYou may fall, but it is not about how many times you fall. It is about how many times you are able to get up and go again. Dust yourself off and press on.â(CA)
