Nine schools to compete in Primary Schools Public Speaking Competition
The Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment will host the annual Primary Schools Public Speaking Competition tomorrow, Wednesday, June 15 at the Methodist Church Hall, beginning at 9 a.m.
The competition is open to students of Grade Six who completed the recently held Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA).{{more}}
This year nine schools are participating: Marriaqua Government â Gregory Hull; Sunshine School â Tiffany Oliver; Lowmans Leeward Anglican â LaTavia Daly; Barrouallie Government â Shakima Stephens; Belair Government â Stanislaus Gomes; Barrouallie Methodist â Isaac Cepeda; Belmont Government â Rolicai Dixon; CW Prescod â Deliannie Scotland; Kingstown Anglican â Aaida Small.
The students will compete in two categories: a student prepared speech and an impromptu speech. Each student is expected to deliver an eight-minute presentation for the prepared speech and a one- minute presentation in the impromptu segment.
The topic for the student prepared speech is âThe print and electronic media have a huge influence on violent behaviours among young people.â
The competition is designed to: encourage students to conduct research; heighten their awareness about issues affecting their health and well-being; improve their communication skills.
Students placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd will be awarded a desktop computer, a laptop computer and a tablet, respectively, and the schools which they represent will each receive a trophy.
This yearâs competition is being coordinated by the Health Promotion Unit and is once again sponsored by DIGICEL.
An invitation is extended to the general public to attend.
