New Rangers encouraged to set example for younger girls

A group of young ladies with different personalities and from different backgrounds have united with one common goal, to be of further service to their communities.

On Saturday, February 7, 21 recruits were officially invested into the St Vincent and the Grenadines Girl Guide Association (SVGGGA), through their membership in the Number 23 Ranger Unit.{{more}}

To be invested into the unit, Ranger guides had to complete the pre-investiture challenge, which includes completing a hike, first-aid training and survival skills, a theory project on the history of guiding and the important elements of Ranger guides in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Additionally, the recruits had to complete a minimum of 12 hours of community service.

During the ceremony, which took place at Flowt Restaurant and Bar, Rochelle Forde, the Western Hemisphere Representative for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, told the recruits that their role as leaders in the community has just began.

“Your service as a young leader and a younger leader of this association begins today and, most importantly, you are setting the example for those Guides, Brownies, Bim Bims to come; so remember every day to be mindful of your actions,” Forde said.

Like Forde, René Baptiste, president of the SVGGGA, also encouraged the young ladies to be leaders and revealed that sometime in the future, she hoped to see seven women sitting in the Parliament of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

“The reason I say that, if you consider how well they have organized and stick to their duty and function and you are an example, especially those who came from Brownies and Bim Bims, of your commitment and dedication to service to the movement, and service to your country. Put all efforts in everything that you do and always remember that wherever you go, you are known by your brand,” the president said.

As part of their promise “to be of further service to the community,” the Number 23 Ranger Unit presented health officer Shanika John with a donation of EC$1,000 for the paediatric ward at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital. A donation of EC$850 was also made to the SVGGGA Centenary Fund.(BK)
