PCCU awards 38 Junior Savers with Acer Tablets

Thirty-eight students across the country are now in possession of brand new tablet computers.

On December 31, 2014, the Police Co-operative Credit Union held its inaugural Junior Savers Challenge Awards at the Police Canteen on the top floor of the Kingstown Vegetable Market, where children enrolled in the Junior Savers programme, accompanied by their parents, were presented with seven-inch Acer Iconia One Tablets.{{more}}

Manager of the PCCU Seymonde Mulcaire congratulated the successful Junior Savers who completed the ‘Challenge’ and said that their achievement is an indication that even at their young age, they can be disciplined savers. She encouraged them to continue to save because they are the future of the Credit Union movement.

The PCCU’s manager also gave an overview of the ‘Challenge’. She stated that the Challenge, which was the brainchild of former manager Daniel Robertson, began on January 2, 2014, and ended on December 31, 2014.

Explaining the rules, Mulcaire stated that the Challenge was open to children up to the age of 14 and each child had to save one additional dollar each week for 52 weeks. She further explained that the Junior Savers were not allowed to pay in advance or late because it meant that the child would have forfeited the Challenge and would have led to an automatic withdrawal.

The Challenge, according to Mulcaire, started off with 67 Junior Savers, but only 38 of them completed and saved no less than $1,378 individually.

In his remarks, president of the PCCU Junior Simmons thanked the parents and guardians of the Junior Savers for choosing the PCCU and congratulated those who endured to the end of the Challenge.

Simmons told the children that the money they save today can chart their future tomorrow. He emphasized to the Junior Savers that by starting a savings plan now, no matter how small, can greatly assist them in achieving their personal goals, be it an education, property, a car and taking care of their health.

President Simmons, speaking about the PCCU’s vision, told the audience that the PCCU subscribes to the core philosophy of Credit Unionism, which is “people helping people” and that the Credit Union’s main objective is to provide for its members economically, socially and culturally through prudent lending and wise financial counselling. He reminded the members that they are the owners of the PCCU and that is why the Credit Union will endeavour to serve them in the best possible way.

Simmons also used the opportunity to thank his fellow directors, committee members, management and staff and other volunteers for their hard work and dedication to the PCCU and its member and in ensuring that the PCCU remains viable.

Cecil Jackson, registrar of Co-operatives, also made brief remarks at the event. Jackson congratulated the winners and also commended the PCCU for the initiative and other programmes that the PCCU has implemented to ensure growth and continuity.

He stated that over the years, the PCCU has been one of fastest growing Credit Unions in SVG and expressed his satisfaction
