Girl Guides honour 12 persons at Gala Dinner and Recognition Ceremony

Last Friday evening, March 8, the St Vincent and the Grenadines Girl Guides Association honoured 12 persons at a Gala Dinner and Recognition Ceremony at the National Girl Guides Headquarters at Level Garden.{{more}}

The event, which was attended by an appreciative audience of guides and guests was hosted by the Council of the Association as a pre-launch event to kick off the celebrations of the centenary of the movement in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Twelve of the leading lights of the local movement were honoured by the Council for their dedicated, committed and outstanding service to the movement on this year’s International Women’s Day.

Among these persons so recognized were: Gwendolyn June Russell OBE, Elaine Connell, Gwen Agard, Louise Toney, Monica Coombs, Elizabeth Child, Inola Tucker, Althea Commissiong (posthumously) and Lorna DeBique (posthumously).

The Girl Guides will mark their 100th anniversary in April 2014.

Welcome remarks were delivered by René Baptiste, the Association President. The citations were read by Chief Commissioner Rechanne Browne-Matthias and Deputy Chief Commissioner Rochelle Forde. The presentations were delivered by the Patron of the Association, Dame Monica Dacon. The rationale for the recognition was read by Vice President Monica Davis.

The Brownie who placed 2nd in the Althea Commissiong Brownie Public Speaking competition, Jodica Cordice of the Sion Hill Brownie Pack, said the opening prayer, and the National Anthem was led by a new guide of the Guide Company at the J. P. Eustace Secondary School.
