The company will use this opportunity to heighten awareness among its staff members about the importance of occupational health and safety, as well as to sensitize the public about health and safety as it regards VINLEC’s installations.

Chief Executive Officer of VINLEC Thornley Myers said awareness of personal health is of utmost importance and encouraged his staff to do medical examinations, so that they can do what is necessary for a quality life. He advised the staff to protect themselves both on and off the job and to think of the safety practices. He said observing a month to raise awareness among staff members about health and safety is a way of contributing to a high quality of life for the employees.

Myers noted that a report from the U.S. Department of Health indicates that 4,500 people die each year from workplace accidents and 4.1 million people suffer from serious injuries in the workplace. “This must not be taken lightly”, he said. General Secretary of the National Workers Movement Noel Jackson commended VINLEC for observing Health and Safety month for the second year. He said health and safety are a fundamental part of the elements that comprise the day’s work at VINLEC, principally because the company is an electrical company and there are high risks in most parts of the job. He said every employee has to ensure that health and safety are observed.

Jackson noted that VINLEC has been making an effort to make health and safety a priority and he anticipates that the month will assist the company in ensuring that the staff works in a safe and healthy environment.

Jackson noted that occupational health is so important that both the constitutions of the International Labour Organization and the World Health Organization make health and safety a basic human right. He said there is room for improvement in occupational health and safety, as no one company in the world has been able to achieve 100% as it relates to occupational safety.

VINLEC’s Environmental, Health and Safety Awareness Month this year is being observed under the theme “Embracing Health and Safety for our Sustainability”.(API)
