GHS Young Leaders on their way

Since their launch on February 28, 2011, the Girls’ High School Young Leaders (GHSYL) have been working tirelessly on the 2011 RBTT Young Leaders project, under the theme “BLUE GOLD – Treasuring Earth’s Reservoirs.”{{more}} On February 10, the group travelled to Union Island, where they officially handed over nearly 800 bottles of water collected at the water drive. During this water drive, staff and students of the Girls’ High School, as well as members of the public donated bottles of water to assist persons in Union Island who are suffering from water shortage.

While in Union Island, the GHSYL visited the Stephanie Browne Primary School, where they were greeted and welcomed with open arms. The students were especially fascinated by the GHSYL mascot “Ms. Drop Drop” who encouraged the students to conserve water and to be mindful of deforestation. Stickers, bookmarks, pamphlets and water were distributed to students and teachers. The GHSYL also visited the Union Island Secondary School.

The GHSYL got the opportunity to tour the island with members of the Union Island Disaster Committee and the Southern Grenadines Environmental Committee. They visited the “Top Well” and the island’s largest reservoir. The girls were particularly excited to visit the “Top Well” since they got the opportunity to learn the techniques used to fetch water from the well.

On Thursday, February 17, at the Girls’ High School annual sports meet, the GHSYL were the sole providers of water for the athletes. They encouraged athletes to drink water, as proper hydration is necessary during exercise.

The GHS Young Leaders will celebrate their week of activities running from March 7 to 12. During this week, the GHSYL will host the following activities: March 7 – General Assembly at the Girls’ High School; March 8 – Symposium at the Girls’ High School, from 9am – 3pm; March 9 – March and Rally, from 2:00 – 5:00pm, through the streets of Kingstown and culminating at the Old Public Library; March 10 – Water Day at the Girls’ High School. On this day we encourage the general public to drink water. “It’s cool to drink water”; March 11 – Fundraising Party at Canash Beach Apartments at 7pm. Tickets are priced at $15 and can be purchased at the Girls’ High School.

Additionally, the GHSYL will be running a water bill competition. The primary purpose of this competition is to encourage nationals of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to reduce their water consumption.

ENTRANTS: Open to all residential (domestic) customers of the Central Water and Sewage Authorities (CWSA);

SUBMISSION DETAILS: Each entry must contain the water bill for February 2011 and March 2011; Each entry must state the full name, address and contact details of the entrant. The results of the competition will be published in the press;

JUDGING CRITERIA: The customer showing the greatest reduction in water consumption between their March bill and February bill will be adjudged the winner;

PRIZE: The winning entrant will have his/her water bill paid from June to December 2011. The GHSYL reminds you to – Save a Drip, Gain a Sip!
