Q&A with the 2012 Miss SVG contestants

Seven of the eight young beauties vying for the coveted crown of Miss SVG 2012 had their first exposure to the media last Saturday, when they spent the day with the media in an interview and photo shoot session at the Young Island resort.{{more}}

The contestants: Miss Super 6, Jolene Bentick; Miss Lotto, Shanique Browne; Miss Mustique Co. Ltd., Terranza Franklyn; Miss Lime, Carice Glasgow; Miss Metrocint General Ins. Co. Ltd., Dieta Tucker; Miss Agricultural Input Warehouse, Kendra Homer and Miss St Vincent Brewery Ltd., Jovonne John, got their first opportunity to answer questions from the media, in preparation for the Interview segment of the show, which is to be held on June 2 at the Victoria Park.

Miss Jergens Aziza Williams was not available to be interviewed as she was out of state.

SHANIQUE BROWNE:

Q: What prompted your decision to enter this show, Shanique?

A: I honestly motivated myself. I really entered for the $80,000 scholarship.

Q: What have you gained thus far?

A: I have learned how to stay focused and not let negative criticism bother me. I am in the public’s eye now and I know this will happen, but I am well prepared.

Q: Are you at all nervous?

A: No! I am more anxious for June 2.

JOVONNE JOHN:

Q: With the show less than a month away, how prepared are you?

A: I am almost there in my preparations for June 2. After the launch of Vincy Mas 2012, it has been very hectic, but I am taking it one day at a time and everything has been coming along quite nicely.

Q: What prompted your decision to enter this prestigious pageant?

A: To be honest, this was never a childhood dream to enter Miss SVG, but I got involved in pageantry last year and that’s where it all started for me.

Q: Are you at all nervous?

A: I am always confident and very determined person and I think I will be a good ambassador for SVG. I am ready!

JOLENE BENTICK:

Q: You are the first person to represent Sandy Bay at this pageant, how does this make you feel?

A: Words can’t even begin to explain how I feel being the first person from Sandy Bay to represent at the Miss SVG pageant.

Q: How has the response from your community been like?

A: Well I am very overwhelmed by the support from my family and friends in Sandy Bay and I just want them to come out and support on June 2.

Q: Was it always a dream to enter this show?

A: As a young girl I always had a passion for pageantry and one day I was at work and decided to sign up for the show.

CARICE GLASGOW:

Q: How are your preparations for the show going so far?

A: Preparations have been pretty hectic with all the ups and downs, but it has definitely been fun at the same time.

Q: What or who influenced you to enter the pageant?

A: I’ve always wanted to enter the Miss SVG pageant since I was a little girl. I would always go the Victoria Park with my mum and look at all the beautiful ladies on stage and tell my mother I want to do that some day. This year, I had enough confidence to enter and I am fulfilling my dreams.

Q: What can patrons expect from you on June 2?

A: Persons can expect something very unique, because I am a very unique individual. Look out for something that has never been done before.

TERRANZA FRANKLYN:

Q: How has today’s meet the media session going?

A: I had a bad start, but I am now having a lot of fun with this.

Q: With your vast experience in fashion and beauty shows, what sets you apart from the others?

A: I think my stage presence stands out most. I am confident on stage and my personality will show people that I am a very approachable person.

Q: Any hardships experienced so far as a contestant?

A: Well, the hardest thing for me has to be travelling back and forth from Chateaubelair. However, that has never stood in my way of being here.

Q: How prepared are you?

A: [grins broadly] I am almost there and come June 2, I will definitely be 200 percent ready.

Q: How would you describe your experience being a Miss SVG contestant?

A: Great! I have learned so much in so little time and I am thankful for this opportunity.

DIETA TUCKER:

Q: Why Miss SVG?

A: [chuckles] That is an easy question, Kenny. This has always been my passion. I’ve always wanted to enter this pageant as a child and that was my main motivation.

Q: Has it been smooth sailing for you?

A: Not really. I had to learn how manage my time better and meet certain deadlines. So it has definitely been a good learning experience.

Q: What are your plans for the $80,000 scholarship, should you be crowned Miss SVG?

A: I already attained an associates degree in Tourism and Travel, so winning that scholarship, I will be pursuing my bachelors degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management.

Q: What would you say to those persons who are hesitant about coming to the show?

A: I would tell them that they can’t afford to miss this show. You need to come to Victoria Park on June 2 because when I am done with my performance, many will be inspired to enter the 2013 Miss SVG.

KENDRA HOMER:

Q: What made you decide to enter this show, Kendra?

A: I always wanted to enter Ms SVG pageants, but I just wanted to do things the right way and complete my tertiary education first.

Q: Being a contestant, what have you learned so far?

A: I have truly gained a lot. I have improved on my self-esteem, communication skills and I have learned how to stand up to public criticism.

Q: What’s been the biggest hurdle for you to overcome?

A: It has be losing weight. I was 170 pounds and now I am down to 135. I took my training and exercise seriously and now I have to start thinking about living a more healthy lifestyle.

Q: Should you be crowned Miss SVG 2012, what are you plans for the scholarship?

A: I would really like to pursue studies in Tourism and Hospitality at the Monroe College and help to develop my country
