Tribute to Peggy Hull
by Rev’d Dr Sylvanus Regisford
This was a case of a name preceding the person for me; for I had heard about all the accolades lavished on Peggy Ince as a member of the St Vincent Netball Team, but had never met her, or even seen her play. It was clear to me that the sporting Community loved her for her exploits, and I surmised, for her personality, and likeability.
It was not until I returned to SVG in 1998 as Canon in Residence at the St George’s Cathedral that I got to meet her in Church as a humble and cheery worshipper who always had a word of advice for me in my Pastoral duties.
I also met her at the Building and Loan Association where she worked, and she was always pleasant, upbeat, and ready to help, not only me, but anyone who came to her to help solve business problems with the Association. I learned that she had married someone from my neck of the woods–Cedars to be exact, and that she was a mother of two girls, and a boy.
In all of this, I was greatly impressed by Peggy’s humility, and her unwillingness to bask in her athletic achievements, but rather to be seen as simply another member of the Community, who wanted the best for everyone. She did not traffic in her popularity, but wanted to make her contribution to Nation-Building, at the Building and Loan, and as mother of her children, and later as grandmother.
I offer my deepest sympathy to her family, and pray that God will grant rest to her soul.
