Miriam had already decided that she wasnât going to tell Ras her secret. What could he do to help? In fact, what could anyone do? Her father was a prominent lawyer. No, she had already decided that she was going to take her secret to the grave. She had bought a bottle of gramoxone from a local farmer. She knew of its effectiveness.
Miriam had already said her good byes to Susan. She wanted to confess about being Sharpieâs new girl, but she didnât have the courage to tell her the truth. Likewise, she wanted to tell Ras what was happening in her life and again her courage failed. There was one thing she wanted to do, and that was to say goodbye to Ras.
When Miriam arrived at the Botanic Gardens she walked around, but didnât see Ras. She was surprised when she realized that Ras was not there as he was always punctual. Miriam couldnât contact Ras as he did not own a mobile phone. Maybe heâs not coming, she thought. She waited awhile. âMaybe I wonât get to say my good byes after all,â she said to herself.
It was late, so Miriam left Botanic Gardens to find a secluded spot where she would not be found. She unscrewed the top of the bottle and sniffed its contents; the smell of the deadly liquid was overwhelming. She wondered about its taste, she stared at the bottle. Am I having second thoughts, she wondered. Why am I doing this?
The image of her father appeared to her and hate welled up inside her. He had forced her to do this to herself. Sheâd hope that her death would rip his soul apart. And as for her mother, she knew and did nothing. Miriamâs fear was replaced by anger and as she placed the bottle to her lips….
âMiriam?â a soft voice enquired; it was Ras.
Miriam was surprised. She hadnât realized that she had been followed.
âI was calling out to you,â Ras said.
Miriam tried to hide the bottle behind her back, but the bottle tilted and the liquid soaked into the grass. Anger was replaced by despair. What was she going to do now? Miriam cried.
Seeing Miriam cry had now become common occurrence and she hadnât told him what was wrong. Ras wrapped his arms around her and in his soothing voice asked. âWhy donât you tell me whatâs wrong?â
Miriam revealed to Ras her terrible secret, from the first moment her father had touched her to her motherâs denial of the situation.
Ras did not interrupt her; he just let her talk. As they sat together, Ras held her more tightly. Heâd wished that he had known about this earlier; at least he would have tried to help. He would have stopped the brute of a man that she had to call father. And to believe a respectable man, a man who called himself honourable, a man who called himself a Christian. Ras knew that in the eyes of the law and God, that both incest and sex with a minor is illegal.
âListen to me, Miriamâ said Ras. âThis is what we are going to doâ
Sharpie was surprised to see Ras turn up at Botanic Gardens. He could hear from a distance that Ras had called to Miriam, so he decided to follow him. Was Miriam really seeing his natty dread behind his back? Sharpie couldnât believe that a schoolgirl was making a fool out of him. Sharpie felt ready to burst Rasâs and Miriamâs head together.
Sharpie discreetly tagged behind Ras. He could see that Ras was tentatively listening to what Miriam was saying, but he couldnât make out what she was saying. He watched as Ras controlled the situation and calmed Miriam down. This boy is good, thought Sharpie. Sharpie watched as Rasâ lips found Miriamâs soft lips. A little too good, Sharpie thought to himself.
