Committee formed to revive Cricket in Georgetown
OTASHIE SPRING IS heading a nine member Georgetown Cricket Organising Committee, formed to resuscitate cricket in the Georgetown community.
The other members of the committee include Vice Chair Antus Wright; Secretary Johnny Noel; Treasurer Ayana Bobb; Competition Manager Osneth Cato; and Public Relations Officer-Marlon Tommy.
Elected facility manager is Rolando Lewis, with committee members in Keron Arthur and Ziffie Morgan.
The Committee is also charged with the responsibility of revitalizing the sporting culture, especially among the youth.
This is also twinned with community engagement, and the refurbishing of the once vibrant Brownstown Playing Field.
The committee thus plans a series of weekend Softball Cricket Ballorama events during May 2026, followed by a more structured tournament to run from July to September 2026, after the conclusion of the North Windward Cricket Tournament.
Speaking on behalf of the newly formed body, Spring said that the initiative is grounded in community upliftment.
“The primary focus is to resurrect cricketing activities from a community- building concept geared at providing additional sporting options for the youths in the Georgetown community and giving the community a more diverse mix of annual sporting activities”, Spring affirmed.
Upbeat about the projections, Spring added, “We are aiming to reintroduce cricket in a sustainable and inclusive manner. The committee plans to begin with softball and tape ball formats, targeting both community-based teams and more established Cricket groups”.
Addressing the matter of the return to action of the Brownstown Playing Field, Spring said “The Brownstown Playing Field has been long regarded as the traditional home of cricket in Georgetown but has seen limited use in recent years. The committee views its reactivation as a central pillar of the revival effort”.
Georgetown was once a hub for cricket here in St Vincent and the Grenadines with the Brownstown Playing Field, being central to the sport.
Over time, the venue has gone to ruins, as the development of the Chili Playing Field with all its amenities, effected a shift, as Football has become the number one sport in the North Central Windward area.
