Physical Planning Department launches full investigation
The Physical Planning Department has mounted an investigation into the destruction of the Canash Mangrove which is part of a protected conservation area.
SEARCHLIGHT carried news of the destruction of the mangrove which was highlighted by Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves on radio where he referred to what is taking place at the location as a massacre.
A visit to the site on Monday September 7, 2026, revealed that the protected ecosystem was gone; in its place was uprooted shrubs, dirt, and rocks, along with a few pieces of heavy construction equipment scattered throughout the site.

About 300 yards away was a jetty that appeared to be 50-percent completed, along with pieces of piling, a generator, and two heavy construction machines.
An officer within the Physical Planning Department later that afternoon said that an investigation was underway and that those undertaking the investigation had already visited the site. He could not say how long the investigation would take.
