ACP Smith wants senior citizens to be protected “at all cost”
ELDERLY PEOPLE IN the country must be protected at all cost is the clear message from acting Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) with responsibility for crime fighting, Brenton Smith.
The ACP was commenting during an interview at the Central Police Station in Kingstown, on the heels of an article last week in this publication that raised the question whether there is a trend in acts of criminality against the nation’s senior citizens.
From murder to rape; burglaries and theft, to assaults, several media outlets have been reporting on crimes against the elderly, at least one story per week.
Since the year has started, the police have been called to deal with several incidents against the elderly, among them, the rape of a 93-year-old woman that took place in the Arnos Vale area in the wee hours of Monday January 26,2026; and the 21st murder recorded here that resulted in the death of Lida Lewis, 84, a farmer who had residency in the United States of America (USA) and was found dead at around 12:50 p.m. on Thursday July 2, 2026 in the Peruvian Vale area. An autopsy revealed that Lewis was strangled and raped.
