Five hundred athletes registered for Kids’ Athletics Festival tomorrow
Five hundred potential Track and Field athletes will converge on the Sir Vincent Beache Stadium, Diamond, tomorrow, Saturday, May 10, 2025, in the biggest Kids’ Athletics Festival so far.
Organised by Team Athletics SVG, the festival will feature 25 teams from primary and secondary schools, clubs, and communities, who will be all decked out in appropriate attire for the occasion.
As such, St Vincent and the Grenadines will be joining other countries being part of the Relay Around the World Challenge, in celebration of Kids’ Athletics Day 2025.
Kids’ Athletics Day is recognized officially on May 7, annually.
Catering for athletes between the ages of 4 and 14, the fun-filled, action-packed day which starts at 9.30 a.m, with a short opening ceremony, will see participants engaged in the Treasure Chest, Clean the Yard,
Hop, Step, Jump, Rhythmic Jump, Hurdles Sprint, Javelin Throw, Cross Hop, Sack Race, Bean Bag,
Formula One, the 4 x 50m, 4x80m, 4x 100m, 4x 150m and 4x200m.
Thereafter, all participants will be presented with certificates.
Tomorrow’s Festival is a culmination of events that involved training of teachers at the primary schools, and Physical Education teachers from the secondary institutions.
Zooming in on the Festival, National Coordinator of Kids’ Athletics in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) Kelisha Yorke, gave a background of the evolution of the global festival.
“It is one of the biggest grass-roots development programmes in the world of sport, and since the original Kids’ Athletics Programme was launched in 2002, it has been implemented by more than 150 Member Federations.”
Yorke further said, “The world’s biggest kids’ relay officially kicked off on April 6, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, and continues for a month building momentum toward Kids’ Athletics Day which is an annual celebration on May 7 , where children are active and participate in athletics. This year’s theme, Relay Around the World, is inspired by the upcoming World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China.”
She added that, “ The challenge is the biggest, most inclusive Kids’ Athletics participation activity yet, designed to inspire the athletes of tomorrow and get kids moving everywhere”.
