World Squash Day activities focused on growth
When the St Vincent and the Grenadines Squash Association (SVGSA), joined the rest of the world in recognizing World Squash Day, on Saturday, October 14, the focus was on growth.
President of the SVG Squash Association – Amber Glasgow revealed that the day was spent trying to grow the sport.
“We had a few from other sports, coming and seeing what the sport is all about and that was one of the highlights of the day, as we want Squash to spread,” Glasgow informed.
Glasgow noted that the World Squash Day event was part of an overall plan to have more persons playing Squash.
“We are presently in talks with an educational institution with the view of getting students enrolled in Squash, which would be another boost for us,” the SVGSA President related.
Additionally, for six hours, members of the Squash fraternity used the day to socialize and engage one another in friendly matches, at the National Squash Centre, Paul’s Avenue.
World Squash Day was first observed in 2002, to pay homage to the Squash players who died in the World Trade Centre attack as part of the 9/11 happenings.
Squash clubs the world over, use the day to have tournaments, demonstrations, talent identifications, as well as other unique activities.
World Squash Day is celebrated on the second Saturday in October.
