Lawyer blames ULP and NDP for mangrove destruction at Canash
Social activist and lawyer Jomo Thomas, says that both the current government and former administration should be blamed for the destruction of the mangrove at Canash.
Just over a week ago Opposition Leader Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, said that while people were focused on the sale of lands at Chatham Bay, Union Island, there was an environmental massacre going on at Canash.
Current development underway at Canash Bay has seen more than 70 percent of the Blue Lagoon mangrove forest cleared, destroying critical habitat for a range of species, while thousands of square feet of seabed in front of Coconut Grove Beach Club have been dug up to build a jetty.
Speaking on BOOM FM’s OMG in the Morning radio programme last Wednesday, Thomas said that Dr. Gonsalves spoke on the issue and sounded like he (Dr. Gonsalves) did not know about it, but the application for the works was submitted under the Unity Labour Party (ULP) administration between August 2025 and October 2025. The government changed hands in November, 2025.
“An application was made by a company called Hydro Tech Limited…The application was made on the eighth of August, 2025… This is during the previous administration,” Thomas told radio listeners, while adding that the ULP administration, through the Planning Department, gave permission for this jetty to be built.
“The application was made on the eighth of August, 2025. They wanted to develop a jetty. I think that’s what we’re seeing, that development all the way to the end, and they wanted to develop the jetty, and this is another business project of Mr. Glass or his conglomerate, because we know he’s involved in a number of different things,” Thomas stated.
