Trinidad defeat Windwards women in inaugural Under-19 series

Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 Women cricketers completed a 4-1 series victory over the Windward Islands Under-19 women at the Cumberland Playing Field on Tuesday, April 19, 2022. In the fifth and final game of the series for the Browne-John/McIntyre Trophy, the Windward Islands having lost the previous three games to give the southern lasses a 3-1 lead, were dismissed for 95 in their 20 overs, replying to 123 for 3.

Batting first, Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 women cricketers scored 123 for 3 in their 20 overs, led by Aniaya Roberts who top-scored with 42, Djenaba Joseph supported with 23, and Maria Lafoucade with 17.

Extras totalled 32. The bowling effort was led by Zaida James who took 1 for 15, Destiny Edward returned 1 for 18, and Selena Ross 1 for 24.

In reply, the Windward Islands Under-19 women were dismissed for 95, with main contributors being Zaida James, 37, Jannillea Glasgow 11, and extras contributing a healthy 26.

Djenaba Joseph was the main destroyer with 4 for 14, Kiara Ruben took 2 for 26, KD Jazz Mitchell 1 for 10, Shalini Samaroo 1 for 16, and Samara Ramnath 1 for 23, as the Windward Islands lost the match by 28 runs, and the inaugural Browne-John/McIntyre Series 1-4.

In the fourth game of the series played at the Cumberland Playing Field on Monday, April 18, batting first, the Windward Islands Under-19 women scored 90 for 9 in their 20 overs. Zaida James scoring 29, Skyy Smith 18, with extras totalling 22.

In reply Trinidad Tobago Under-19 Women reached the target in 15.4 overs amassing 91 for 7, with contributions coming from Sahlini Samaroo and Maria La Foucade who each knocked 16, and Kirah Manpaul 10.

Windward Islands Under-19 Women’ skipper, Zaida James, topped the batting in the series with an aggregate of 155 runs, at an average of 38.75, and a highest individual score of 71 not out. James scored the only half-century of the Series.

Shunelle Sawh of Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 women was second with an aggregate of 86 runs, at an average of 21.50, with a highest individual score of 47. Third was Djenaba Joseph also of the Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 women with an aggregate of 68 runs, at an average of 17.00, and a highest individual score of 23.

The next best Windward Islands Under-19 women’s batter was Jannillea Glasgow who was fourth in the standings with an aggregate of 57 runs, at an average of 11.40 and a highest individual score of 22.

Djenaba Joseph also of the Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 women’s cricket team topped the bowling with an aggregate haul of 11 wickets at an average of 10.91.

Zaida James of the Windward Islands Under-19 women was second with a series haul of 8 wickets at an average of 8.25, and third in the bowling standings was Kiara Ruben of the Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 team with 7 wickets at an average of 11.71. The next best Windward Islands Under-19 women’s bowler was Selena Ross in fifth position who returned 7 wickets.
