HIV/AIDS advocate says he was fired
HIV/AIDS advocate and educator Winfield Tannis- Abbott, is claiming political victimization after his position as Aids Coordinator for Public Sector Entities was made redundant by the New Democratic Party (NDP) administration as of July 15, 2026.
Tannis-Abbott held the position since 2018.
Initially, he worked at the SVG Port Authority, now the Modern Port Operations Company (MPOC), but was seconded to the Ministry of Health.
The redundancy letter from MPOC, dated July 15, 2026 reads, “Reference is made to the correspondence from the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environmental Health and Energy, dated July 10, 2026, formally terminating the secondment arrangement with effect from July 15, 2026.
“In accordance with the Ministry’s directive, you are scheduled to revert to the substantive employment of the SVG Port Authority. However, following a thorough review of the organisational structure and operational requirements, we regret to inform you that the position of Aids Coordinator for Public Sector Entities (the substantive post you occupied for the entire duration of your secondment from April 1, 2018) is no longer required.
