SJC students Kingstown, dominate Youlou Arts Foundation Art Competition

STUDENTS OFTHE St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown, took the top three places in the third annual Secondary Schools’ Art competition organised by theYoulou Arts Foundation (YAF).

The competition, which is open to students between ages 12 to 16, had as its theme this year: ‘Celebrating SVG”. It attracted a total of 15 students from four secondary schools- St Joseph’s Convent, Kingstown; St Martin’s Secondary; Girls’ High School; and the Dr J.P. Eustace Memorial Secondary School.

Fifteen-year-old Magdalene McMillan of the St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown won the first place; her school mate Avea Patterson, 15 years old, placed second; while Bethonna Thomas, another 15-year-old also of the St Joseph’s Convent, Kingstown, placed third.

Some entries received honourable mention.

These were submitted by 14-year-old Jayden Scott of the St Martin’s Secondary School; Daijon Ambris, 15 years, also of St Martin’s Secondary; and 15-year-old Catalina Balcombe of the Girls’ High School.

The Foundation explained in a release that students were judged on creativity, interpretation of the theme, originality and proper use of medium.

The first placed winner will receive $500.00; second placed, $400; and third placed $300; while students whose work received honourable mention will each receive $100.00.

The competition was sponsored by the St.

Vincent Co-Operative Bank Ltd- the Penny Bankwhich this year provided six prizes.

This Bank,also known as the Penny Bank, is one of the oldest indigenous financial institutions in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) and was founded in 1945 by Ormond Forde. It has sponsored the Secondary Schools’ Art Competition since its inception three years ago.

The work of the students who took part in this year’s competition is currently on display at theYoulou Art Gallery at Indian Bay, and the public is invited to visit and view the work of the students. No date as as yet been set for the presentation of prizes to the winners.
