Mangrove destroyed in conservation area – Opposition Leader
OPPOSITION LEADER Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said that while people are focused on the sale of Chatham Bay, Union Island, there is an environmental massacre going on at the South Coast Marine Conservation Area at Canash.
Speaking on the Morning Comrade radio programme on August 31,2026 the former prime minister said the government has been promoting conservation at Chatham Bay as a key justifi cation for selling approximately 100 acres of state land there, but it is simultaneously allowing large–scale destruction in Canash.
“You can’t do conservation there and have environmental massacre and marauding taking place right up here at Canash, our South Coast Marine Conservation Area.”
Gonsalves said two major private developments are underway at Canash Bay, within what is officially designated as the St. Vincent and the Grenadines South Coast Marine Conservation Area.
He said residents report that one developer has cleared more than 70 percent of the fragile Blue Lagoon mangrove forest, destroying critical habitat for a range of species.
