Keo Davis finished with a silver and a bronze medal emerged the top performers for St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) when the curtains came down on the 49th staging of the Junior Carifta Games.

In his debut outing of national representation, Davis won his silver in the Under-17 Boys 200m and his bronze in the 100m.

A student of the St Vincent Grammar School, Davis left his mark on officials and spectators at the Jamaica National Stadium on the Easter weekend with some good performances.

He clocked 22.19 in the 200m finals, bettering his 22.80 done in the semi-finals.

Before his silver medal run, Davis gave a glimpse of his prowess, clocking 10.77s in the 100m final. He had stopped the clock at 10.85s in the preliminary round.

Joining Davis with a silver medal was Uroy Ryan, whose 7.52m, placed him second in the Under-20 Boys Long Jump. Ryan, a former student of the Emmanuel High School Mesopotamia and the Thomas Saunders Secondary School is currently enrolled at college in Jamaica.

Accounting for SVG’s two other medals are Verrol Sam and Amal Glasgow, both students of Kingston College in Jamaica, and former students of the St Vincent Grammar School. Sam took bronze in the Under-20 Boys High Jump, clearing the bar at 2m, while Glasgow stopped the clock at 47.89s, to gain a bronze medal in the Under-20 Boys 400m.

The next best showing by the Vincentian athletes was Shonte Matthias’ journey in the Girls Under-17 finals of both the 100m and 200m. She finished seventh in the two finals.

Grenisha Thomas was fourth in the Under-20 Girls 400m Hurdles; Nellie Ambriton who is based at Jamaica College, placed fifth in the Under-20 Boys 1500m and was seventh in the 800m.

Among the Under-20s, Kyle Lawrence and Devonric Mac reached the semi-finals of the 100m and 200m, and Gailann John was sixth in the Girls Heptathlon while Kirk Hamblet was not given a place in the Boys Octathlon after failing to compete in the 1500m which reports say, was on doctor’s orders.

The other Under-17 athletes included Jahieme Harry, AJ Delpesche, Kodi Grant and Sacri Sobers.

Harry reached as far as the preliminary round of the 400m, but placed fifth in the 800m. Delpesche got only as far as the preliminary round of the 400m and was seventh in the High Jump. Grant placed eighth in the Long Jump and Sobers who competed in the 100m and 200m, failed to get past the preliminary stage.

SVG was fifth in both the Under-17 Boys and Under-20 Boys 4 x 400m relays.

The locally based athletes , along with officials- Michael Ollivierre, Chester Morgan and Chantel Legair, returned to the country, yesterday, Thursday April 21.
Carifta 2023, the 50th edition, will be hosted by the Bahamas.
