Leewards Hurricanes tame Jaguars in PCL

THE LEEWARD ISLANDS Hurricanes broke the winning streak of the Guyana Jaguars last Sunday at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence, in the Regional 4 Day Professional Cricket League (PCL).

The Hurricanes came away winners by two wickets, over the defending champions, thus ending their unbeaten run which spanned over 15 matches.

Set 291 to win, the Hurricanes reached 296 for 8.

Montcin Hodge – 127, Kacey Carty – 67 and Jason Peters – 27 not out, saw the Hurricanes over the line.

Bowling for the Jaguars, Vereesammy Permaul took 4/43, Romario Shepherd-2/52 and Keemo Paul – 2/69.

The Jaguars got to 196, in their first innings, with Christopher Barnwell hitting 58 and Leon Johnson – 44.

Rahkeem Cornwall picked off 4/70 and Damion Jacobs – 3/15.

Jacobs then hit a topscore 34, as the Hurricanes lost power, to be dismissed for 175.

Clinton Prestano – 4/50 and Romario Shepherd-3/29, were the Jaguars most successful bowlers.

Prestano followed up his four wicket haul, to lead the Jaguars second innings total of 269, by contributing 46. Tagenarine Chanderpaul hit 40.

Cornwall snared 6/ 70 and Jacobs, 2/90, as the Hurricanes were set 291 to win.

At the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Barbados rebounded to beat Trinidad and Tobago Red Force by seven wickets.

Red Force managed 170 in their first innings as Kevin Stoute bagged 6/35 and Marquino Mindley had 2/34.

In response, Barbados Pride –215: Nicholas Kirton and Shamar Springer, both scored 47.

Bowling for the Red Force, Odean Smith – 3/32; Anderson Phillip – 3/73 and Daniel St Clair – 2/59.

The porous batting of the Red Force fared worse in their second innings, dismissed for 103.

Shamar Springer pulped 4 / 24, Marquino Mindley – 4/47 and Kevin Stoute 2/22.

Pride reached the 58 needed to win, for the loss of three wickets. Anderson Phillip took 2/22, bowling for the Red Force.

And, the Jamaica Scorpions saw off the Windward Islands Volcanoes by four wickets at the Grenada National Stadium.

Windwards Volcanoes 285: Devon Smith – 124, Kavem Hodge – 56 and Denis Smith – 49.

For the Jamaica Scorpions – Denis Bulli – 5/94, Derval Green 2/35 and Jerome Taylor- 2/48.

In response Jamaica – 272, Chadwick Walton – 125, Brandon King – 52, while Larry Edwards – 4/79, Ray Jordan – 2/36 and Kavem Hodge – 2/51, bowling for the Windwards Volcaones.

Batting a second time, the Windwards Volcanoes – 198. Kavem Hodge – 52, Devon Smith – 47.

The Scorpions’ bowling saw Dennis Bulli taking 5/54 and Chadwick Walton – 2/10.

Set 212 to win, the Scorpions got to the target for the loss of six wickets; Walton- 78 , King -56 and Kenroy Williams- 36 not out. Tyrone Theophile had 4/44.

The tournament takes a break this weekend, but resumes January 31.

The next round of matches will see the Red Force hosting the Jaguars; Barbados Pride is at home to the Volcanoes and the Scorpions are away to the Hurricanes, in Basseterre, St Kitts.
