SVGCC on a roll at International Schools’ Cricket Festival

The French Verandah SVG Community College (SVGCC) is on a roll in the 2017 Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Cricket Tournament.

Winning their four matches on the trot, the SVGCC thus far has stopped Harrison College of Barbados, Combermere also of Barbados, along with Bolton School of England and the School of Nations of Guyana.

The Vincentians’ fourth win was registered last Friday, a 103-run trumping over the School of Nations of Guyana.

Asked to bat, the SVGCC recovered from 24 for 3 to score 247 for 6 in 37 overs. Romando Browne, 82 and Zivon Walker, 70 not out, shared a fifth-wicket stand of 118. Browne had earlier added 73 for the 4th wicket with Dillon Douglas, who made 37.

Ariel Tilku and Christopher Kowsilla picked up 3 for 51 and 2 for 39, respectively, bowling for the Guyanese.

A 30-minute delay after lunch because of rain, resulted in a revised target of 201 in 30 overs set for the School of Nations. They, though, were restricted to 97 for 9 when their allotment ended.

Mark Ramsammy top scored with 40. Jeremy Layne, 4 for 12 and Jerremy Haywood, 2 for 10, snuffed out the Guyanese batting resistance.

On Thursday, in their meeting with Combermere, the SVGCC batted first, ending on 221 for 9 in their allotted 40 overs. Alex Samuel stroked 53, while Dillon Douglas contributed 46, Urnel Thomas, 38 and Rayon Williams, 20. Maxwell Lewis bagged 6 for 67.

Combermere began their run chase positively and were at one point 73 for 2 in the 13th over, but were eventually dismissed for 124 in 28.5 overs. Thaddeus Chase hit 42 and Shakkae Marshall, 26.

Bowling for the SVG Community College, Jerremy Haywood had 4 for 20 and Dillion Douglas, 3 for 23, to win by 97 runs.

Then, on Wednesday, Bolton Schools recovered from 29 for 2 after 10 overs to score 202 for 7 after their allotted 40 overs. Dan Southworth made 59, Kurtis Watson, 53 and Joe Ball 36.

Roshorn John, 2 for 19 and Rayon Williams, 2 for 37, were the Vincentians’ best bowlers.

The Community College responded with 204 for 7 in 38 overs. Zivon Walker scored 54 not out, Alex Samuel, 31, Rayon Williams, 29 and Randall Roberts, 27.

Ben Milnes’ 2 for 38 from 8 overs were the best figures for the bowlers from Bolton School.

The SVGCC, in the second visit to the tournament, got off to a winning start by defeating the Harrison College of Barbados by 103 runs, at the Four Squares Ground on Tuesday.

Sent in to bat, the Community College got up to 228 for 6 in 32 overs at the cut-off point for the first innings.

Dillon Douglas stroked 107. He shared a 93-runs third-wicket stand with Alex Samuel, who got 47 and 75 for the fifth wicket with Tilron Harry, who was 27 not out.

Micah Shephard, 2 for 32 and Lijani Cherry, 2 for 45, were Harrison College’s best bowlers.

Harrison College got up to 73 without loss after 16 overs, but fell away to be dismissed for 125.

Brandon Sealey scored 36, while Lijani Cherry got 31. Captain Jeremy Layne picked up 4 for 29 and Jerremy Haywood, 2 for 26.

SVGCC was set to meet St Leonard’s of Barbados in their fifth fixture yesterday, Monday.
