SVG female cricketers dominate Southern Windwards team

St Vincent and the Grenadines, as expected, dominated the selection of the Southern Windwards team, set to feature in the regional tournament, slated for Trinidad and Tobago next month.

Eight Vincentians and six Grenadians make up the squad, which was selected from a three-match series between the two last Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Grenada National Stadium.{{more}}

The team will be captained by Juliana Nero, with fellow Vincentians Latoya Providence, Stacy Ann Adams, Shavorne Clarke, Vinisha King, Cordel Jack, Crystal John and wicketkeeper Glendeen Turtin, part of the 14-member squad.

Vice-captain Afy Fletcher, Akeira Peters, Anisha Thomas, Rachael Cyrus, Holly Charles and Aria Fortune of Grenada complete the team.

Four reserves, Nyasha Williams, Kimone Homer and Shenezia Daniel of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenadian Careana Noel have also been selected.

Cleton Burnett of St Vincent and Grenadines is the team’s coach.

Meanwhile, St Vincent and the Grenadines swept the three-match series, with convincing wins on each occasion.

In their last match on Sunday, St Vincent and the Grenadines romped to a 29-run win to confirm their supremacy over their opponents.

St Vincent and the Grenadines scored 197 for 8 off 50 overs; Juliana Nero made 58 and Shavorne Clarke, 48 not out.

Shanton Clarke, 3 for 28 and Careana Noel, 3 for 32, were the main wicket takers.

In reply, Grenada reached 168 for 7 off 50 overs, with Anisha Thomas making 53, Debbie Ann Lewis, 30 not out and Akeira Peters 28.

La Toya Providence was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 for 28.

Before that on Saturday, St Vincent and the Grenadines recorded a five-wicket win in match two.

Anisha Thomas top scored with 57, as Grenada made 137 all out in 44.3 overs.

Shenezia Daniel was the most successful bowler with figures of 3 for 53 and Cordel Jack had 2 for 19.

St Vincent and the Grenadines responded with 144 for 5 in 38.1 overs. Leading the way was Cordel Jack, who hit 53. Ana Fortune took 2 for 17, bowling for Grenada.

In the first match on Friday, Grenada won the toss and chose to bat, but was dismissed for 115 off 31 overs.

Akeira Peters struck 32 and Afy Fletcher 24. Bowling for St Vincent and the Grenadines, La Toya Providence took 3 for 17 and Vinisha King, 2 for 12.

In response, Juliana Nero hit 35, to see her team to 116 for 4 in 36.1 overs, winning by six wickets.(RT)
