Grenadians rule Vincy road again

For the second year in a row, Grenada has trumped the four-leg, NACAC OECS International Road Relay Classics.{{more}}

The Grenadian quartet scorched the course in 27 minutes, 15.08 seconds, ahead of St Vincent and the Grenadines in the two- way face-off. The Vincentians’ time was 27 minutes 55.12 seconds.

Grenada pouched the US$1,000 which was up for grabs, and St Vincent and the Grenadines, $700. It was the third time that the Grenadians were in winners’ row, having taken the 2011 edition, when it was known as the Round D Town Road Relay.

Also retaining titles, but in the local categories, were the Petit Bordel Secondary, which won the secondary schools’ male segment and IT DAT, which topped the open female category for another year. Petit Bordel clocked 33 minutes 25.20 seconds, leaving the St Vincent Grammar School in second place in 33 minutes 44.02 seconds and third, the Sandy Bay Secondary in 33 minutes 49.45 seconds.

IT DAT’s winning time was 45 minutes 42 seconds, leaving X-Ceed to settle for second in 47 minutes 36.60 seconds. Docking in third was IT DAT #2. Petit Bordel also secured the female division among the secondary schools. The North Leeward institution returned a winning time of 41 minutes 18.39 seconds. Central Leeward Secondary docked second in 41 minutes 54.22 seconds and third was Sandy Bay in 47 minutes 04.87 seconds. And, there was more success for the schools on the Leeward side of the island, as the Buccament Bay Primary pouched both the female and male divisions of the primary schools’ category.

Buccament won the female category in 45 minutes 15.95 seconds and the males in 39 minutes 14.82 seconds. Trailing the females were the Overland Government and the Owia Primary in 45 minutes .08 seconds and 45 minutes 58.12 seconds, respectively. The Sandy Bay Primary was second in the male segment in a time of 42 minutes 39.48 seconds Chateaubelair Methodist stopped the clocked at 42 minutes 15.85 second to place third.

And, X-Cel was one and two in the open male division in 29 minutes 10.67 seconds and 29 minutes 21.08 seconds respectively. Third was ITDAT in 30 minutes 48.70 seconds. The open category pocketed $600 for the winners, $400 for the second place and $200 for the third place.

The first placed teams in the primary category earned EC$300, with the second place collecting $200 and the third place, $150. The winners of the secondary schools category gained $400, the second place $300 and the third place, $200.

Fifty-three of the fifty-six teams which started the event completed the course.

The relay began from the intersection of Halifax Street and South River Road; from there, runners headed up to Sharpe Street, then onto Bay Street, turning at Lower Bay Street, on to Back Street, with the changeover at the starting point.

The next event on the local calendar is set for Sunday, October 13, when the Log Enterprise Sion Hill Sprint race will take place. This represents a change in the calendar of TASVG, as the Rabacca to Byera Hill run was previously set for that day. (RT)
