Editor: Quite a number of people, including those belonging to religions, make the statement: “Once saved, always saved.”{{more}} Is that really true? What does the Bible really teach?

Before Jesus chose his twelve apostles, he spent the whole night in prayer to his Father. Among the twelve chosen was Judas Iscariot. Of course, we know that God did not mislead Jesus into choosing Judas as an apostle. The fact that Judas was chosen clearly shows that he was in an “approved” position at that time, a position to be saved, as the other apostles who were chosen. Luke 6:12 – 15.

In fact, John 17:12 indicates that Judas Iscariot was among those that the Father had given to Jesus. However, having God-given free will, Judas later turned traitor, betraying Jesus. Was Judas still saved? If he was, why did Jesus refer to him as the son of perdition (destruction)? So Judas lost out. Therefore, the statement, “once saved, always saved,” is NOT true. It is not based on Scripture. Furthermore, 2 Peter 2:20-22, proves that a person in a position to be saved can lose that position if he returns to an ungodly lifestyle.

Moreover, Jesus Christ said at Matthew 24:13 that it is those who endure to the end that will be saved. Thus, a person MUST endure faithfully in obedience to God’s requirements down to the end of the world if they are to be saved. 1 John 2:17b; 5:3. So never be fooled into believing the statement “once saved, always saved.” That is certainly wrong! Beware of the Devil’s misleading tactics. Revelation 12:9.
