We have to revisit our customer service in SVG

Editor: We recognize that we are living in hard economic times. Thus every dollar saved is important. Likewise, spending wisely is highly recommended, thus when shopping, many would look for the best prices for items.{{more}}

What we lack in this country are good sales persons who would seek to convince others to buy and would even reduce their goods to get a sale. It is sometimes discouraging to buy local goods such as provisions and mangoes just to name a few. These goods, many times, are very costly, much more costly than the imported ones.

Imagine in a country like SVG where mangoes, when they are plentiful, are wasted, and yet we have grafted mangoes that are half ripe being sold for two and three dollars for one. Imported carrots are many times cheaper to purchase than the locally grown ones. We have a small heap of tannias, eddoes etc being sold for five or so dollars per heap. This is indeed not good.

This I believe is a rip off by those who are selling these goods. For I am certain that the mark up or profit they make from these goods in some cases is close to one hundred percent.

There is a laid back attitude by some sales persons in stores. There is a lack of politeness and persuasion. Even some who sell on the street are sometimes not polite and turn customers away.

If we must progress as business people, we have to be competitive, and this may mean cutting prices in order to attract buyers. We have to be friendly and courteous and know how to approach the customer. We have to even control our anger when we encounter difficult customers.

I trust we will seek to improve our business approach and strive to be the best we can and thus have a successful business.
