Victory for the NDP is not impossible, says Jamaican MP

A Jamaican member of parliament has urged supporters of the New Democratic Party (NDP) not to give up, as defeating the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP) is not impossible.

Rhoda Moy Crawford, member of parliament (MP) for the Manchester Central seat in Jamaica, while addressing the NDP’s ‘Hope for Youth Rally’ on Saturday, November 18, shared the story of how she became MP for an area that had not been won by her party for 31 years.

“Before my election in 2020, my party, the Jamaican Labour Party, faced 31 years of challenges, trying to win the constituency I now represent. So many influential candidates had the opportunity to contest, they tried, they worked hard, but they failed. When I decided to run for that seat, many thought that I was committing political suicide, they said I could not win.”

Adding to her challenge was the fact that her opponent had never lost a parliamentary election before and he was also a successful business man who had defeated one of the country’s former prime ministers.

“I did not give up. My grandmother told me that when there is a Goliath in front of you, there’s a David within you…. There is a David within each of you and that time has come for the NDP party to form the government,” Crawford said.

“… So I am saying to you, it is not impossible to beat the current government. But you must be committed, you must work hard, you must give your full support to the party leader, Dr Godwin Friday and the political representative of the NDP.”

As one of the youngest MPs in Jamaica, Crawford said that she has an interest in the growth and development of her country and the Caribbean as a whole, saying that the plans of the NDP will produce a better livelihood for all Vincentians.

“I have studied very closely the work of Dr Friday and the NDP team and I can tell you that an NDP government, led by Dr Godwin Friday will grow your economy and create more jobs in better conditions with better salaries…. An NDP government, led by Dr Godwin Friday will lower the cost of living so that your quality of life will be improved.”

The MP reminded those in attendance, of the plans and promises of the NDP, as well as how beneficial they will be to the nation.

Crawford added that the leader of the Jamaica Labour Party and Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness considers Dr Godwin Friday a brother and true friend of Jamaica.

The NDP Hope for Youth Rally, which took place at the Campden Park Playing Field was well attended by supporters and young people from across SVG.

The party shared its plans to make life easier for Vincentians, specifically targeting the area of sports and the arts, as well as reminding Vincentians about the NDP’s promise for a new and blue economy.

The rally saw performances by local young artistes as well as artistes from Jamaica including dancehall artiste Govanna.
