NDP vice-president calls on public to grade ULP on its 21 years in office

As the ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP) celebrates 21 years as the ruling administration in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) a senior member of the opposition has called for Vincentians to grade the ULP, either with a pass mark, or a failing grade.

This call was made by vice president of the New Democratic Party (NDP), major St Clair Leacock while speaking on his party’s New Times programme on Wednesday, March 23.

The ULP has advertised a virtual video showcase marathon to mark its 21st anniversary and the celebrations began yesterday, Thursday March 24 with a pre-election rally. The celebrations will climax with a ULP victory rally on Monday, March 28, the date when the party was elected to office in 2001.

According to the advertisement, the ULP is celebrating 21 years of “excellent governance “ in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

On Wednesday, Leacock read excerpts from the ULP’s 2001 general elections manifesto, listing the top 10 priorities and asked listeners to decide if it was indeed excellent service.

“As I walk through them, I ask you listeners to mark them for yourselves and decide what kind of pass mark, or more likely, what is the extent of their failure rate,” Leacock prompted listeners.

He shared the view that,” the most distinguishing feature of the ULP is the extent to which they have divided St Vincent and the Grenadines.”

“There is no political party in the living history of this country…that compares with this government now,” he stressed.

The opposition politician said the ULP’s legacy “would be the way they divided St Vincent.”

Leacock further alleged that the ruling party victimises people, and “you either red or dead.”

He also said the government has provided no quality jobs, and SVG is now known for its joblessness.

Commenting on government’s promise to be tough on crime and the causes of crime, Leacock said many young people are now turning to crime.

According to him, secondary school students now rank high among the prison population.

Leacock also charged that SVG is a “lawless country.”

The ULP celebration will be broadcast live on all the party’s social media platforms, and also on Star Radio, IKTV and SVGTV.
