SMSS is most improved school for CSEC 2016

The St Martin’s Secondary School is the school that recorded the most significant improvement in this year’s Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Secondary Education Certification Examinations (CSEC) in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

According to a release from the Ministry of Education, the school’s pass rate increased from 73.51 per cent in 2015 to 87.62 per cent in 2016. This represents a 14.11 per cent increase.{{more}}

And for another year, the St Vincent Girls’ High School (GHS) has topped the exam with an overall pass rate of 97.19 per cent. The St Vincent Grammar School (SVGS) followed with 94.29 per cent, while the St Joseph’s Convent Kingstown (SJCK) was third with 91.76 per cent, with the St Martin’s Secondary, the Thomas Saunders Secondary and St Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua following with 87.62 per cent, 86.75 per cent and 80.58 per cent respectively.

This year, 2,805 candidates registered for the exam, of which 1,337 were private candidates and 1,468, school candidates, a release from the Ministry of Education said.

The 1,468 school candidates sat 10,164 subject entries in 34 subject areas, from 26 secondary schools. Approximately 75 per cent of the subject entries were awarded Grades I – III (the corresponding figure in 2015 was 75 per cent and 71 per cent in 2014).

12.30 per cent of the passes were at Grade I level; 28.52 per cent at Grade II and 33.84 per cent at Grade III. Last year’s figures were 18.22 per cent at Grade I, 36.38 per cent at Grade II and 45.40 per cent at Grade III. According to the release, the school which recorded the most significant improvement over the previous year is the St Martin’s Secondary School, whose pass rate increased from 73.51 per cent in 2015 to 87.62 per cent in 2016. This represents a 14.11 per cent increase.

Eleven schools obtained creditable pass rates between 60 per cent and 80 per cent. These are: Bishop’s College Kingstown – 79.13 per cent; Mountain View Adventist Academy – 76.00 per cent; West St George Secondary School – 70.33 per cent; Emmanuel High School Mesopotamia – 66.11 per cent; Union Island Secondary – 63.98 per cent; Bequia Community High School – 63.41 per cent; Bethel High School – 61.80 per cent; Sandy Bay Secondary School – 61.48 per cent; Adelphi Secondary School – 61.36 per cent; North Union Secondary – 60.70 per cent and the Bequia Seventh Day Adventist School – 60.38 per cent.

This year’s outstanding results include Eric Febuary of the Mountain View Adventist Academy who achieved 20 subject passes, 17 Grade I’s and 3 Grade II’s; two students who obtained 14 subject passes; three students who obtained 13 subject passes; 19 students who gained 12 subject passes; 36 students who gained 11 subject passes.
