UWI female students awarded bursaries for academic excellence

Three students at the University of the West Indies Open Campus have been awarded bursaries by Coreas Hazells Inc for their outstanding academic work.

Verdessa Browne, Lornette Moore and Keisha Peters, who are currently pursuing bachelors degrees in early childhood education, were the lucky recipients of this year’s awards.{{more}}

Speaking at the handing over ceremony at the Open Campus on Monday, Elka Phillips-Roberts, the human resources manager at Coreas Hazells, told the recipients that her company is committed to surpassing the expectations of all their stakeholders.

“We operate with a strong service culture that complements the view that as a company operating within the Vincentian society we have an inherent civic responsibility to support the community that has made us market leader in many areas of our business.”

Roberts stated that education is one such area to which they are committed, noting that scholarships are also awarded to employees’ children who perform well at the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA).

“The company pledges its continued support in important undertakings such as this one,” she said.

“We will therefore continue to work with the Open Campus to continue to provide assistance wherever possible, whilst at the same time utilizing their services to create programmes aimed at developing our staff at Coreas, both academically and professionally,” Roberts added.

This is the second year that Coreas has offered bursaries to students. However, this year, they increased the number of bursaries offered from two to three.

Deborah Dalrymple, head of the Open Campus, stated that the campus looks to the corporate sector for partnerships to help students.

“Sometimes that little financial help makes the difference between one or two courses or taking a leave of absence…and we are therefore very happy for that very reason…,” she said.

Dalrymple stated that she hopes the partnership between the Open Campus and Coreas Hazells Inc will continue.(CM)
