According to Consultant Gynaecologist Dr Camille Nichols, the room where the CardioTocoGram machine is housed was used by doctors for departmental meetings; however, after the machine was donated by the Chilean government a few months ago, a decision was made to convert the room for its current purpose.
The CTG machine allows health care providers to monitor fetuses antenatally and during labour.
âIn an ideal setting, we should have one machine per bed; however we only have one CTG machine and 10 beds, so it was decided that rather than move the machine from bed to bed, it would be in one location to avoid the machine being damaged,â Dr Nichols explained.
She further explained that she approached Hospital Administrator Cuthbert Knights for some assistance to have the room properly provisioned to facilitate the machine.
However, she was told that the hospital could not facilitate the project. That was when Dr Nichols said she contacted some local business houses and asked for assistance.
âI think that it was so heartwarming that at times like this, they have been able to come together and donate items,â Dr Nichols said.
Knights also acknowledged the donors and commended them, saying that the gesture was welcomed, particularly now that many businesses are feeling the effects of the global financial crisis.
