More rigid policies needed in recruitment of police officers

John was at the time speaking at the 31st Passing Out Parade of Recruits on Thursday, April 26, at the Old Montrose Police Training School.

“There is a need to establish early what motivates a new recruit. Is it job satisfaction, power or money? The answer to these questions will determine whether or not the person should be accepted or enlisted,” John remarked.

John, a former police officer, said there is a great deal of work to be done to improve the perception of the police force and its officers.

“The public assess you and give you the greatest publicity when your actions are perceived to be wrong. I am certain there are number of accomplishments that you made that are not publicized,” he said.

A suggestion was made to the management of the local constabulary to pay closer attention to the risk of defaulters in the force. Those persons, John said, create a negative impact on the force.

Speaking about the dismissal of a recruit because of gross misconduct, John stressed the need for a more rigid recruitment policy.

“This should not only focus on background and associations of the person, but also their character, etiquette, habits and self-esteem…,” he opined.

According to John, in order to succeed as a police officer, one must build good relationships.

“You have to develop good interpersonal skills, which will enable you to interact with other policemen, superiors, and help you in performing your daily duties…,” John added.

John urged the 50 new police officers to always act in a professional manner and avoid using excessive force. He further beseeched the young officers to be courteous, respectful and continue to set goals for themselves.(KW)
